Rakesh Kumar is now a full time author. He took VRS (Year 2019) from Railways from the post of Sr. Section Engineer (W)/Land & Heritage in Divisional Railway Manager Office, Firozpur (N.Rly). He thwarted number of attempts of private parties and land mafia grabbing the railway land in Firozpur Division. He traced Railway Land worth Crores of rupees from old Punjab State Government Revenue records. He got highest awards in Indian railways employees which include three National awards. He is also a author of eleven books.
He was awarded highest award of "India Railways Ministry of Railway National Award (MR Award)" for outstanding work for protecting the Railway land during the year 2009.
He has also won highest award of Indian Railways "Ministry of Railway National Award for English Essay Competition (Second Prize)" for the year 2010 on the topic ‘PUBLIC PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP OVER INDIAN RAILWAYS’ .
He also got "Ministry of Railway National Award ‘Lal Bhadhur Shashtryi (First Prize)" for the year 2016 for his technical book ‘Railway Bhumi Parbandhan Karoron kamane ka Sarot.’

BABA FARID AWARD FOR HONESTY - 2011
Baba Farid Society Faridkot Awarded “Baba Farid Award for Honesty of the Year 2011” to Sh. Rakesh Kumar on 23 September, 2011 being the "Most Honest man". This includes Rs 50,000, Citation, Doshala, Siropa. This Award is given by the society to the most honest person, after lots of inquiry about the competent person.
This Award was already given to Dr. Kiran Bedi IPS, Sh. Kirshan Kumar IAS, Sh. L K Yadav IPS, Sh. Kanwar Vijay Partap Singh IPS, Sh. Hem Raj Mittal Ex. SSS Board Chairman, Justice Kuldeep Singh etc. by the society.
This Award was given to Rakesh Kumar as he never took a single penny from any contractor or other person as a commission/gift during his 26 years of Railway service, although he made payment of crore of Rupees for construction work to the contractors.
He exposed encroachments upon hundreds of acres Railway Land from Land Mafia/Private parties & got space freed under threat to life & department backlash.
He faces criminal cases, inquires but never left the path of honesty.
IRTSA AWARD
Indian Railways Technical Supervisors Association (IRTSA), a struggling association from year 1965, awarded Rakesh Kumar as “INDIA's MOST OUT STANDING RAIL ENGINEER OF THE YEAR ”
during their 47th Annual Conference on 4th December, 2012 at Rail Coach Factory (RCF) at Kapurthala, by recognizing his work on Railway Land Management. He authored two books on Railway Land Management and also suggested how Indian Railway might earn crores from their valuable asset land.

Organized a seminar on the Dissemination of Knowledge about Revenue Records including procedure for acquisition & demarcation of railway land including maintenance of land records at Jalandhar on 17-18 November, 2008.
Was a visiting lecture on 5 December, 2011 IRICEN (Indian Railway Institute Of Civil Engineering ,Pune) to deliver a lecture on Railway Land Management.
Attended a workshop on land matters (land plan and working out of various charges) at Northern Railway Headquarter office on 17 December, 2011.
Attended and presented a paper during seminar and workshop on land management on 02 February, 2012 at Centre for Advanced Maintenance Technology(CAMTECH), Maharajpur,Gwalior (M.P.).

The best achievement of Division land earning Rs 69.29 crore against the HQ target of Rs 20 Crore. Railway Board Member Engineering also lauded the efforts.
He was awarded the Principal Chief Engineering Award for Year 2010-11 at New Delhi.
He was awarded the Divisional Railway Manager Award for Year 2002, 2008, 2009 and 2012.
In year 2010, he got second positions in Divisional Hindi Essay completion, Noting & Drafting completion.
He also got number of cash awards.
